#113. Songs performed by Rick Astley are both catchy and used as jokes.

Why not catchy and viewed seriously?  Most still associate the "fiddle" with Appalachian Hillbillies or barefoot Missouri farmers.

They don't recognize what's being overlooked.

It's called "interpolation" when music has been injected into another song.  It's allegedly based on noise and considered undetectable.

Robin Thicke fell victim to it on the single "Blurred Lines" from 2013.  The song had a "feel" or "sound" similar to music performed by Marvin Gaye during the 1970's.  It was enough for Marvin Gaye's heirs to win damages from both Robin and Pharrell Williams.

The lawsuit accused them of plagiarism over the Marvin Gaye song "Got to Give It Up".  The evidence was about as subjective as it gets - personal "feelings" or opinions about a piece of music.  We aren't aware that any physical or analytical evidence was presented.  The defendants were ordered to pay up and that ended it.

How did personal opinions on the "feel" of a song manage to win a lawsuit?

We suspect the judge's listening ability goes beyond patient respect for other's difficulties.

There are at least 3 different Marvin Gaye songs 'interpolated" or injected into "Blurred Lines".  They are some of the most notoriously suggestive or disgusting songs in existence (depending on how one values modesty or private matters).  The two easiest to recognize are:

  • Marvin Gaye - Sexual Healing
  • Marvin Gaye - Got To Give It Up

See if you're able to pick out the titles or choruses from the clip below (installing a bass booster type app may make it more difficult or easier to hear or perceive):

If memory serves correctly... at least one of the accused explained it as attempting to recreate the sound or music of an earlier era.

Society was different then.  Not everyone wishes to turn back the clock to that exact moment.  Can a song from a different era - hidden in present-day music - bring back a "feeling"?

If "suggestion" worked that way... no one would be happy about it.

More information will be provided.
