National Security Secrets #8

  National Security Secrets

#8 - Every key pressed on a laptop keyboard can be remotely detected when the laptop is within an oscillating current.

Of course there's no individual, group, or agency with any interest in what you type on a laptop.  So this secret may not be a concern to anyone.  Wink ;)

Anything conductive that's also in the path of an oscillating current behaves like an antenna.  Probably not a great antenna but if it's conductive a signal should be generated.

  • Clicking a key on the laptop keyboard both alters the characteristics of it as an antenna (so there's a detectable change in the signal).
  • Clicking a key also causes a brief burst of static at the same time.
Whether you find either of those things interesting is up to you.  But it's also theoretically possible to capture the clicks then apply a little computer artificial intelligence (AI) to reconstruct what was typed.

All from a short, safe distance away too.
